In the last 5 to 10 years, cellular biology and genomics have gone through a revolution that has radically changed the landscape. New equipment and methods have led to new science that has left many websites and books out of date. This includes books by Richard Dawkins and the man himself, Charles Darwin. After a lot of research with science papers and books, I’ve put together a document that summarises many of the changes, along with their impact. This isn’t an aggregation of topics from creationist websites, but is a look at main stream science by an engineer who tries to be an independent thinker. Engineering concepts help us to understand the human body. For example, a heater and thermostat (an engineered closed loop control system) help us to understand aspects of homeostasis (a collection of biological closed loop control systems). It was mildly encouraging that Richard Dawkins seems to favour an engineering approach when appraising design. He said: - Engineers are often the people best qualified to analyse how animal and plant bodies work, because efficient mechanisms have to obey the same principles whether they are designed or designoid. Dawkins, Richard. Climbing Mount Improbable . Penguin Books Ltd My writing falls far short of Dawkins’ standard of prose, but I provide links to many solid references, and apply engineering logic. I point out that Dawkin’s use of the term ‘designoid’ is not necessarily correct. The document can be downloaded by clicking on the link below. Your conclusions, of course, will be your own. Enjoy! An Engineers Take on Darwinian Evolution.pdf (File updated May 5 2021 Ver 1.28) In 1996, Richard Dawkins made this prophetic statement about seemingly purposeful change to organisms:- But Darwinians would actually be pretty surprised (as well as intrigued) if any such beneficent mutational mechanism were discovered, for three reasons. First, despite energetic searching, no such mechanism has yet been discovered (at least in animals and plants: there is a very special and not generally relevant suggestion of a case in bacteria in which the facts are still controversial). Second, there is no existing theory that could explain how the body might ‘know’ which sort of mutation to induce. Dawkins, Richard. Climbing Mount Improbable . Penguin Books Ltd Since he wrote this, evidence of a mutational mechanism in bacteria has firmed up, and previously unknown mechanisms for beneficial change have been discovered. He was right, Darwinians were very surprised. Read about this on page 6 of the document. This document is updated every few weeks or less for two reasons. 1. It’s a work in progress and there are a number of other areas that will enhance the document when included. 2. New research that impacts evolution theory is published regularly. Small updates are made to include some of this.
